The Ghostman of Skye. Beautiful, sad, haunting...

I have just posted the Midnight Ball with blurry eyes... I have just watched an amazingly touching film on the Beeb called "The Ghostman of Skye", it reduced me to tears:
The Ghostman of Skye

This is a Celtic Britain I know and love that is fast disappearing and it's so wonderful to hear the old languages spoken, which my Grandparents generation all did (albeit in Welsh)... in between the ghost stories and tall tales we learn about the love of his life and it made me think how seldom we see really old people on TV and how little patience we have to listen to their stories. Give Donald Angus MacLean a hearing if you have the time, and reflect about a time when love often did last a lifetime.

Tonight's the night!!!

Well, it's almost time, final preparations are being made at the Hall as the guests begin to arrive... hope to see you there later, we'll have a BALL!

Nighthsade Hall will be open for guests at around 11.30pm (UK time) tonight and the Ball will begin... at Midnight. Many dolls by the fabulously talented members of the ADO (Art Dolls Only) group are already changing into their finery and getting their hair done for the big night. I hope to see you there :o)

Polanski's Vampires...

OK, just to get you in the mood for Halloween...

You knew I'd be back, a quick blog trawl calms me down :o)

Nip over to Obscure Hollow and take a look at today's postings. Despite Mr Polanski's current dubious situation and his tragic/scandalous past there's no denying that he is a great film maker but many critics have ripped my favourite Polanski film to bits over the years... I saw "Dance of the Vampires" when I was quite a young child and it just seeped into my imagination and just won't leave. I adore this film, despite the dodgy "comedy" that often falls flat, this is one of the creepiest, most atmospheric Vampire films out there bar non. It's beautifully photographed, mainly on location in eastern Europeand has a  wonderfully haunting soundtrack.

It's become a family tradition to watch this film whenever it snows (once every few years), that will make sense if you've seen it! My favourite scene is when all the ancient Vampires rise from their graves under the snow in the castle court yard to come to the midnight ball... yes, a Halloween Midnight Ball! Do yourself a favour and try and find a copy of the version shown on British TV rather than the American version (I think it's called The Fearless Vampire Hunters). I've seen both and presume that the critics were all watching the recut and messed around with US release... and I can see why they slated it!

OK, back to work!!!

Crikey!!!!!!!!!!!

Crikey, I shouldn't be on here at all today as I have so much on my plate! I still have a lot of work to do to get ready for the Midnight Ball on Saturday. Haven't been able to do as much as I'd hoped because some freelance came along (yay!!! It pays the bills, never forget that bit :o) ). So with the freelance finished I thought I had the rest of the week clear to finish everything... cue Dick Barton music.

Also I need to finish making the Paper Mache coffin so that I can list Belladonna in my shop (she will ship in it so I need to take the near finished item with her safe inside to the Post Office to get shipping quotes. They are on intermittent strike action, so that should be fun! AND I am making a doll for the ADO Vampire Mini Monthly Challenge which finishes on the 7th of NOV.... so quite a bit to be getting on with!!!

Then, of course, some more Freelance work comes along and, of course, it takes precedence over everything! It's great to be in demand but boy are the next few days going to be hectic! Hope you will all come and join us for the Midnight Ball on Saturday when my website comes back online (around 11.30 pm UK time) Freaky Little Things

Here's my Lishe!

OK, you talked me into it! Tee hee :o) Here is Lishe in her box, you can buy them all made up with eyes wigs and costume if you are V V V RICH!!!! Naturally, I bought a blank gal who came nude with a pair of eyes, very nice blue ones as it happens - I was lucky, it's random what you get. I have added the knickers and sprayed her with Mr Super Clear UV cut, as resin darkens with prolonged exposure to sunlight. I intend to keep her behind glass once she's finished, but for now she just sleeps in her box, safe in her pillows. And given her a preliminary lip colour, the make up is sort of layered on with a spray of Mr Super Clear in between layers. I use chalk pastels and acrylic paints.

But there are 2 heads, I hear you say? That's how I got started, I saw a Lishe second/third hand head on ebay and bought it cheap over christmas. It had on hideous make-up which I researched how to remove and then made a few attempts at doing her make-up in a style I liked. That was it, I had the bug, and had soon bought 2 smaller MSD dolls  (Lishe is SD, around 60cm tall, MSDs are about 43cm) but decided that I preferred the larger dolls as I want to make my own clothes for them and the MSD size is too fiddly!

I will sell the older head once Lishe (to be named Delphine, she's going to be Marie-Antoinette style) is finished. I just fell in love with the face sculpt but look at those hands, they are so delicate. They cost a lot of money but I guess it's not so much more than an Art Doll and resin is expensive material. Even though they are made from moulds, each one is hand poured and finished as orders come in so it's a pretty labour intensive business, plus, of course, somone had to make the beautiful, beautiful original sculpt. I love her anyway and can't wait to get making the clothes, I already have a wig!

Den of Angels anyone?

Just wondering if anyone reading this is a member of Den Of Angels, the BJD forum. I joined about 6 months ago thinking it would be fab to have someone to chat to about my BJD passion (the cats just don't share my enthusiasm!) but I am finding it a very lonely experience to put it mildly. People just carry on chatting to each other around my comments and totally ignore my pathetic attempts to join in! It seems quite cliquey to me as an outsider, I have to say. Although every other comment seems to be someone saying how friendly it is on there :o(

Maybe I just don't fit in but if anyone here is a member and would like to befriend me I would be jolly grateful, I don't bite... much :o)

Magical Halloween Celebration: Part One

Matilda Dejected -

Once Upon a Time, 3 Kitties lived together in a big old garden in North Wales. The elder cats, Dave and Old Red, had lived there many years and were a bit set in their ways. The youngest, Matilda had come to live with them only a few years ago and was full of energy and mischief. The boys despaired of her, wanting only some peace and quiet. They also despaired of Matilda's fanciful, romantic nature, always looking for adventure and magic.

Matilda loved both her companions, especially Old Red... her furry heart always beat a little faster when he looked her way, but inside she was lonely and felt out of place. Her tiny pink paw pads itched to dance to a different beat...

Belladonna revealed

Here she is finished...Belladonna. I got a bit carried away with the feathers on her top hat... which means her box is going to have to be BIG! I need to make her a black lacquered coffin/box to ship in before she gets listed in the shop. I'll let you know when she's in the shop as you can then see the pics larger with more detail if you want :o)

ADO Halloween Challenge Doll WIP

Thought I'd give you a quick peek at my now finished doll Belladonna. She was great fun to make for this years ADO Halloween Challenge which ends tomorrow... so why am I showing you the WIPs today? Well, blame it on the killer-driller headache I've had all day today, but I thought it was the 15th!

So here she is in the early stages, and yes that is a hairnet that she has on in the last picture! Check back tomorrow for the finished doll and I think the rest of the exciting creations will be making their debut on the ADO blog, can't wait to see them all :o)

Apologies in advance

Further to what I posted below, in preparation for the Halloween Ball, my website might go a bit crazy over the next week. Basically, I'm trying out new layout ideas, and the only way I know how to see if they work is to actually publish them live! They will all probably go on the scrap heap in the end and we will be left with what has already worked for the last year!

October treats and a Midnight Ball!

Yay, it's October, the Haunting Month. With Halloween just 19 days off I thought I'd tell you about a few things coming up...
the 15th is the reveal day for the ADO Halloween Quarterly Challenge, and I will be sharing my doll and the process of her creation with you then. The doll on this icon is by fellow ADO member Paula Nerhus, so beautiful, and the other little batty cutey is by Grace of Little Black Crow :o)

Photobucket

On the 17th I have decided to join in with A Fanciful Twist's  Hauntingly Magical Celebration although I have no idea what that what I will create for this event just yet (love flying by the seat of my pants, I guess I should use a broom stick for this month at least!!!) tee hee ;o)

Photobucket

And, finally, to end the celebrations, Halloween itself will see my website change over to it's new look! Everything that creeps or crawls, slithers or slurps, flutters or flaps will be making it's way to the Ancestral Home of Freaky Little Things, the magnificent Nightshade Hall, for the annual Midnight Ball, and you are all invited to join us! Can't wait :o)

"New" Dolls in the shop

I'm just about to go off and post two new dolls into my etsy shop. Cerys the Little Witch and an old favourite, Magenta Khalo. Magenta was made in early 2007 and I have kept her as a mascot, she appears on my business cards (see pic). She is one of a small handfull of dolls that I haven't been able to bring myself to part with and has sat with the rest on the chair in my bedroom.

Unfortunately for Magenta, her legs dangled down and, as I mentioned in a previous post, attracted the attention of a curious kitty (she writes a blog too, you can see the link at the side" The Mewsings of Matilda) who proceeded to love Magenta's legs into oblivion with her teeny claws. Magenta has had a full leg transplant this week and a general spruce up and would now like to see a bit of the world. Anyone interested in adopting her should bear in mind her past, if you are allergic to cats, perhaps she isn't the one for you. Thankfully, I managed to keep cats and dolls far apart in most cases, just in case they get a creative urge and start rearranging things :o)

Dark and Dreary

I managed to finish 2 new dolls for the shop yesterday (I have a wardrobe full of "started" dolls to work on from earlier in the summer) and also gave a very old doll a leg transplant. Her felt boots became a favourite scratching post for a certain Kitty and one day they just exploded sending fibre-fill all over the bedroom chair... so she went to live in the wardrobe until I had time to make her new legs!

The doll that is, not the Kitty!

Yesterday was beautifully sunny but I got finished too late to photograph them... today? Well, it's only half past midday and I have all the lights on and the room is still full of dark shadows. It's pouring with rain and is that far off thunder I hear? Great! Hopefully I can show you the newbies tomorrow :o)
